The red ring of death on your Xbox 360 is a major problem. It is such a huge problem that there are hundreds of guides, tips, and myths floating around the internet. Some of these tips are good temporary fixes, while other simply don’t work. Unfortunately, all of them are temporary and even if they do work, usually will lead to eventual permanent damage to your console…
Microsoft has acknowledged that the red ring of death error is a certified fault on the console. It is characterized by the three lights around the power button become red instead of green and start blinking. Unfortunately, it is a generic warning message that states there is something wrong with the console, but won’t give you any more specific information than that.
Typically, the fault is cause by a lack of sufficient operating power, overheating, or one of a myriad of other problems. Without first knowing what the actual problem is, you are hard pressed to come up with a fix. That is why most of the tips online will either not work or will lead to a major problem – you’re fixing something without actually knowing what is wrong with it.
Microsoft offers a standard warranty on its consoles. If you receive the red ring of death during this warranty period, you can send it back to get repaired at no cost (other than shipping) to you. If it is outside of warranty, you will be charged $140 by Microsoft to troubleshoot and repair the problem.
Got a broken Xbox? There are quite a few repair guides online, but there is only one I recommend. It is guaranteed to fix your Xbox, no matter what the problem is, in less than an hour.
